Dear Math Team Sponsor:
We would like to invite your team to participate in the Hoover High School Mathematics Tournament to be held on Saturday, March 5, 2011.
There will be five levels of competition: Comprehensive, Algebra II, Geometry, Algebra I, and Pre-Algebra. Team awards will be given in two divisions: Division I for all private and large (6A) schools and Division II for small (1A-5A) schools.
Each school may enter as many competitors per level as desired. The comprehensive level is open to all students. For all other levels, students must be currently enrolled in or have completed the mathematics course at that level and can not be enrolled in or have completed a higher mathematics course.
The written test will consist of 25 multiple choice questions and three tie breakers. The score will be four times the number right minus the number wrong. Four designated team members will participate in a ciphering contest, having five questions each. Two minutes will be allotted for each question. Points will be awarded on the basis of five points for the first minute and two points for the second minute.
Trophies will be presented to the top five teams and top ten individuals for each level of each division. Team awards will be based on the top four written scores plus the total ciphering points of the team members. Individual awards will be based on the written test only.
Again this year an interschool test will be offered as a separate competition. This score will not be included in the team score. Trophies will be awarded to the top three teams. The test may be picked up at registration and turned in no later than noon at the registration desk.
The tournament schedule will be as follows:
8:00 - 8:30 a.m. Registration
8:45 - 10:00 Written Test (Pre-Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II)
Ciphering (Algebra I, Comprehensive)
10:00 - 10:30 Refreshments
10:30 - 11:45 Written Test (Algebra I, Comprehensive)
Ciphering (Pre-Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II)
11:45 - 2:00 Lunch
2:00 Awards - Pre-Algebra, Algebra I
2:30 Awards - Geometry, Algebra II, Comprehensive
The registration fee is $6.00 per student. ($10.00 after February 11) Please return the enclosed registration form, along with your payment, postmarked by February 11, 2011. No registrations will be accepted that are postmarked after February 21. Checks should be written to Hoover High School. You will receive additional information in the mail after you register.
